Hyundai Motor Group’s robotics subsidiary Boston Dynamics announced on the 18th (local time) its plan to locally produce and deploy humanoid robots Atlas in the U.S. The company aims to establish an annual production system of over 30,000 units by 2028 and initially deploy over 25,000 units at Hyundai Motor and Kia’s factories.

Hyundai Motor Group held an overseas institutional investor relations (IR) event themed “Robotics Strategy” on the 18th (local time) at the Westin Boston Seaport District in the U.S. Six companies participated in the event, including Hyundai Motor and Kia, Hyundai Mobis, Hyundai Glovis, Hyundai AutoEver, and Boston Dynamics. Hyundai Motor Group Vice Chairman Chang Jae-hoon and Boston Dynamics Interim CEO Amanda McMaster attended.

The core of Hyundai Motor Group’s disclosed roadmap and value chain is the vertical integration of a robotics production system centered on “Atlas.” According to Hyundai Motor Group, Hyundai Motor and Kia will handle the mass production of 30,000 Atlas units annually. The strategy prioritizes internal use within the group before external sales. However, specific deployment timelines and factories were not disclosed.

The group will establish an actuator (joint drive device) production plant in the U.S., producing over 350,000 actuators annually. Hyundai Mobis will operate the plant. Actuators, which utilize energy sources like electric motors, hydraulics, or pneumatics to bend or rotate robot joints, account for approximately 60% of humanoid manufacturing costs as a core component installed in each joint.

Hyundai Glovis will manage logistics, including parts supply for Atlas production and its distribution. Hyundai AutoEver will be responsible for building software infrastructure, from robot data collection and management to smart factory optimization.

Additionally, Hyundai Motor Group did not disclose the timing of Boston Dynamics’ initial public offering (IPO).
