Located in Milan’s Piazza del Castello and set against the historic backdrop of the medieval Castello Sforzesco, the installation transforms one of the city’s most recognisable public spaces into a cutting-edge demonstration of how digital technologies can enable personalised virtual retail solutions.

The Wonder on Ice showcase was officially opened on 7 February during a ceremony attended by Kirsty Coventry, President of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), and Joe Tsai, Chairman of Alibaba Group.

“It’s really wonderful to be here at Alibaba’s Wonder on Ice showcase, celebrating our partnership, which is getting stronger and stronger,” said President Coventry.

What is so special about the Games is athletes, fans, spectators coming together and celebrating in sport. One of our shared goals with Alibaba is ensuring that we continue to connect with people around the world. – Kirsty Coventry, IOC President
“Alibaba and the IOC share a simple belief together: technology should enable the Olympic Games to be more exciting, accessible, sustainable and connected,” said Joe Tsai, Chairman of Alibaba Group.

With the power of AI, we are moving from ‘Cloud Olympics’ toward ‘Intelligent Olympics’, as AI helps us work better, make smarter decisions, and connect more meaningfully. – Joe Tsai, Chairman of Alibaba Group
Featuring a distinctive, snow globe-inspired pavilion, the Wonder on Ice showcase invites visitors on an interactive AI-guided journey, curating a personalised virtual retail experience that is tailored to their individual interests and preferences.

The opening of the showcase also marked the unveiling of the results of the Alibaba Cloud AIGC Championship @ Milano Cortina 2026, an AI-powered fan engagement initiative developed in partnership with the IOC and the Milano Cortina 2026 Organising Committee. Using Alibaba’s AI video-generation tools, fans from around the world were invited to create original artworks inspired by winter sports. A selection of 100 entries will be projected onto the showcase’s snow globe pavilion throughout the Games, with the collection becoming the first AI-generated artworks to be acquired by the Olympic Museum.

Building on innovations introduced at Paris 2024, Alibaba’s support of Milano Cortina 2026 includes cloud-powered broadcasting solutions to improve efficiency and reduce carbon footprint, AI-enhanced 360-degree replays to elevate the viewing experience, and AI-powered sustainability tools enabling smarter energy and carbon management across venues. All these are powered by Alibaba’s AI models from its Qwen series.
