Amazon’s cloud computing arm Amazon Web Services (AWS) said power to one of its data centre facilities in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) was temporarily shut down after objects struck the site, triggering sparks and a fire.
According to Reuters, the incident occurred at about 4:30am PST, affecting one of AWS’ Availability Zones known as mec1-az2.
The company said the impact caused sparks and flames, prompting the fire department to cut electricity to the facility while crews worked to extinguish the blaze.
It will take several hours to restore connectivity in the affected zone, AWS said, adding that other Availability Zones in the UAE region remain fully operational.
The disruption comes as the UAE grapples with retaliatory missile and drone strikes by Iran following US and Israeli attacks on Tehran. Iranian strikes have reportedly hit airports, ports and residential areas across the country and the wider Gulf.
When asked whether the data centre incident was linked to the regional strikes, AWS did not confirm or deny any connection.
