Indonesia and South Korea agreed to strengthen digital public services through strategic cooperation covering internet accessibility, stronger data protection, and artificial intelligence (AI) talent development.

The Indonesian Communication and Digital Affairs (Komdigi) Ministry formalized the agreement with a memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed alongside South Korea’s Ministry of Science and Information and Communication Technology in Seoul on Wednesday.

“Through this collaboration, the government aims to enhance the quality of digital networks,” Komdigi Minister Meutya Hafid said in a press release cited in Jakarta, pledging more reliable internet connections for schools, health services, and businesses.

She added that the MoU also lays a foundation for closer cooperation in monitoring digital spaces and strengthening safeguards to protect personal data from leaks and misuse.

The minister also mentioned a joint program designed to boost digital literacy and improve people’s capacity in the safe and productive use of technology.

“We want this cooperation to deliver direct benefits to the community,” Hafid stressed.

Furthermore, she noted that the MoU is intended to set a framework for bilateral collaboration on developing and utilizing AI as a tool for advancing education, health, food, and other strategic sectors.

“Technology must be used to assist teachers in educating, enable health workers to provide swift services, and help farmers with decision-making,” she affirmed.

Hafid also announced the government’s plans to roll out training, scholarship, and expert exchange programs in a bid to cultivate more digitally skilled talent in Indonesia.

“We envision more Indonesian youth taking part in technological development,” she said.

She went on to say that Indonesia and South Korea had agreed to optimize the use of AI-powered infrastructure to support technological research and development.

The two governments, she added, will establish a joint committee to oversee the implementation of the MoU, which is also expected to expand growth prospects for digital entrepreneurs and start-up companies.
